Lunar New Year Celebration

If you are Asian, you usually celebrate two new years. The REACH at the Kennedy Center hosted a lunar new year celebration with a collaboration from the Korean Cultural Center in DC.

Outside was a beautiful light display with the zodiac signs, pandas, and mushrooms. Inside were traditional Korean activities and I was told there was also a Korean drum performance as well.

It’s times like these when I am grateful to live in DC as its the ♥️ of culture.

Homemade Wings

A quick and easy way to make fried wings without deep frying it in oil.

*of course this is possible if you have an air fryer😅

Honey-glazed wings

Ingredients:

1 pack of chicken wings (I bought a 1.5 lb pack and it had about 13 wings)

Tempura flour (can use regular flour)

  • For marination:

3 small onions

2 tbsp of garlic

4 tbsp of mirim (can use white wine)

  • For sauce:

1 1/2 tbsp of sugar (I used brown)

2 tbsp soy sauce

2 tbsp water

2 tbsp vinegar

1 tbsp honey (I used agave syrup and it gave the same glaze feel like honey would)

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Wash the wings in cold water
  2. Dice the onions and garlic very fine and mix in the mirim (this is the marination
  3. Marinate the wings for 30 minutes in the onion and garlic mixture
  4. To make the sauce, mix the soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, water, and honey
  5. Once the wings are done marinating, add enough tempura flour to lightly cover the wings
Cook the wings in the air fryer for 25 minutes (I have a preset option for chicken on my air fryer so I chose that, but the temperature was 400 degrees)*every 5-10 minutes flip the wings over so it cooks properly all over
Heat a pan to cook the wings with the sauce. Once the pan is heated, pour the sauce and wait for it to starting boiling
Add in the wings to the sauce and mix until all the wings are covered in sauce

New beginnings: FALL

Weather is getting colder and the leaves start changing colors. For me, fall signifies a new beginning for me. It probably is because I work on a college campus where September is when school starts and students come back to campus.

Personal news: I decided to pursue a MBA this fall so I started the online MBA program at GW so it is convenient for me to attend school and work at the same time. ⏰ management has become a KEY factor because I need to balance school work and a full-time job. I just finished midterms that it is hard to believe I am already halfway through my first semester.

At work, it is the new start of a college basketball season with a new men’s basketball head coach and the start of a new responsibility in my job that I started 8 months ago that starts when the men’s basketball season starts.

All in all, I love fall-not cause of the weather, but of how beautiful things look while the sky is still blue and the leaves change colors from green to a variety shades of red, orange, and yellow. As colors change, I see new starts as a fresh change that happen in your life for you to take the next step.

Michelin⭐️ Sushi Taro

Thanks to the invitation of a special friend-went to another Michelin ⭐️ restaurant 🤩

Loved the interior and all the sushi fish tasted fresh!! Outside of your typical salmon, tuna, and yellowtail, I loved how this restaurant had a variety of nigiri fish options and most were fish I never heard or saw at other sushi restaurants.

I had the portland sea urchin, pike mackerel (seasonal), ocean trout (seasonal), squid, and blackthroat seaperch (seasonal). With friends, I shared the fatty tuna roll and Saniki Kama-Age Udon. Everything I ordered was DELICIOUS! Though my favorite was the sea urchin, mackerel, and squid.

Recommendation: make a reservation ahead of time. There was not a line of people waiting when I got here, but my friend told me she had made a reservation ahead of time cause this place was so popular.

Protect Your 💋s

Sharing a beauty product that was recommended to me by a friend when I told her how my lips easily are chapped and dry no matter how often I put on chapstick and vaseline.

I didn’t know such a thing existed, but ta-da! there is a mask for your lips 👄.

This product is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. I started using it about a month ago. Every night at the end of my skin care ritual after I brush my teeth, I have been putting this on lips. It’s a balm type product so it is easy to apply using your fingers and it also smells good!! 😊

In the morning, I’ve found that my lips feel moisturized and soft. Also when I apply lipstick, I don’t see any dry chapped lines either (cause who doesn’t hate when you see a crack on your lips after you apply lipstick??).

Vaseline is a cheaper alternative, but I found this to be a bit more moisturizing than Vaseline and for $20 it’s not a bad investment. I bought mine from Sephora so if you are interested in protecting your lips with cold weather just around the corner-why don’t you take a peek IF you just happen to be near a Sephora 😉

Salmon Donburi (연어덮밥)

I love salmon and always wanted to try making this because I realized it is not hard…

I bought some salmon sashimi from H-Mart (a Korean grocery store) and everything else I had at home.

On the rice, add and mix a sugar+vinegar mixture (2 tbsp of vinegar and 1 tbsp of sugar).

Cut the salmon into slices and layer the slices onto the bowl.

Cut some avocado🥑 into slices and then place it on top with some alfa sprouts. I had made tomato🍅 preserves a couple days back and added that on top and… there we go!!!

Summer Vacation: Hawaii 🌴

Checked off ✔️ city #2 off the bucket list this past June.

I had a chance to be in Hawaii and visit two islands: MAUI & OAHU while I was there.

The food, sights, travel was all AMAZING that all my family and I kept saying, we’re in a different country even though we were in the US. 😂

I love the ocean so the fact I was surrounded by water everywhere I looked was unreal. 🌊

Cherry Blossoms 2019

Reminiscing the cherry blossoms on this rainy day… 💦

It’s already been a month since that beautiful sunny ☀️day in early April when the cherry blossoms were in peak bloom. Other than walking along the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms, I also went to Artechouse, which is an interactive art exhibition in DC.

I recommend checking out Artechouse if you haven’t been. They change the exhibit every couple of months. I’ve only been to their Cherry Blossom exhibit this year and last year, but I highly recommend checking out their other exhibits! You can check them out here.

LOCAL EAT: TEAMANIA

Found a local gem! It’s cute cafe called Teamania. They say their an Asian-European bakery and that’s the PERFECT description.

For a non-sweet tooth like me, the desserts aren’t too sweet. They have your typical coffee drinks, but also some interesting and tasteful tea and fruity drinks too.

Anyone who lives in the Rockville, MD area I recommend checking it out!

Signal of Spring in DC🌸

In DC, you know it’s finally spring when the cherry blossoms come in peak bloom around the Potomac River. With my sister in town for the weekend, we became tourists for the day and walked along the Tidal Basin and the monuments to enjoy a day in DC. The weather was sunny and warm that it was definitely the PERFECT spring day! 😊
